Lets take a moment to remember the fact that the original Khan, portrayed by Ricardo Montalban was of Hispanic decent and not Indian as the character is written to be. For those who are upset that the filmmakers chose Benedict rather than say, an Indian actor to be more politically correct, I understand your argument, but even in the original star trek, Khan was not politically correct. The truth is, there are plethora of films where where racism is prevalent. It doesn’t make it okay, and the issues run deeper than Star Trek and Benedict’s portrayal. If we’re gonna get upset about racism in film we must look at all films rather than one. Mike Myers in the love Guru; he portrayed (offensively according to many) an Indian love guru. He’s Canadian. Everybody remember Dragon Ball Z? A white Canadian played an Asian of sorts; 21, Bringing down the house, The last Samurai, Aladdin, Gremlins, dangerous minds, Transformers: revenge of the fallen etc. There are plenty of films at the link below, but the point is when speaking of racism we must look at all things for it all intersects and is part of the fabric of all our beloved institutions.
